3 Reasons Why the human eye has a pupil
While a lot of people love nothing more than to gaze lovingly into their partner’s eyes, a lot of people find eyes to be incredibly creepy. A lot of people would gladly donate their kidneys and liver in the event of their death, but wince at the prospect of giving up their eyes. In ancient times, people used to believe that the eyes were a mirror of the soul, so it is hardly surprising that even generations later we should have a morbid fascination with them. Anyone who has studied biology will know that there are several different components to the eye and that these components all have different functions.
Here are three reasons why the human eye has a pupil.
Reason 1: They are an indicator of our excitement levels
Next time, you see a child jumping up and down with excitement, see if you can take a peek at their pupils. (The black dot in the center of the iris) Chances are they are dilated. Several changes occur in our body when we get excited; most people become aware of the increase in their heartbeat. However, unless they are actively staring into a mirror, most people won’t be aware of the changes in their pupils.
Reason 2: They help you see better
Improved visibility has to be a bonus! So, if you are out late at night in the pitch black, then your iris’s will send messages to your nervous system indicating that you need more light. Your pupils will then dilate, and voila! You can suddenly see better.
Reason 3: They are the gateway to your nervous system
This might seem terribly complicated, but, in essence, your pupils are simply a portal in the middle of your iris that allows messages to be transmitted to the central nervous system. This is maybe the most accurate interpretation of the eyes being the gateway to the soul.
We hope you have enjoyed our mini-biology lesson. Eyes really are a fascinating and undervalued part of our body. Make sure that you take good care of them!
